We are seeking a skilled individual to join our team as Safety Officer. In this role, you will ensure the well-being of our employees, ensure compliance with health and safety practice and enforce measures to minimise risk and implement safety for all staff and visitors.

Our Health and Safety team is based in Portishead near Bristol, travel within the force area will be required in line with the requirements of the role.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Delivery of a comprehensive support service to all aspects of health and safety to inform all staff of current good safety practice, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation and to minimise risks and costs to the Police Authority.
  • Coordination of the completion, evaluation and monitoring of written risk assessments regarding the health and safety of all individuals on Police Authority premises.
  • Assisting staff (in particular risk assessors) to complete a full risk assessment programme, thereby ensuring statutory compliance.
  • Processing and analysing accident/injury on duty data to identify and evaluate trends and to promote effective accident prevention policies and procedures to minimise risk to all staff and visitors.
  • Developing and executing the organisational health and safety policy in order to ensure all staff understand their responsibilities for health and safety issues and to ensure that health and safety is implemented through the force by undertaking workplace audits.

Skills and experience required:  

  • Hold or successfully complete the NEBOSH National Certificate in Occupational Safety and Health within 12 months of appointment.
  • An in depth knowledge of health and safety legislation
  • Experience of completing risk assessments
  • Experience of analysing data and writing reports
  • You will hold a full current driving licence or be able to travel around the force area using alternative transport

Additional Information:

To be eligible to apply for this role you must have a 5 year ‘checkable history’ in the UK – ideally this means that you would have been resident in the UK for the last 5 years.

Avon and Somerset Police encourage flexible working where operationally possible.
This role has been identified as a blended role.
The successful candidate for this role will have the opportunity to work from home whilst also at a secondary work location, which will be a police premises. The successful applicant will have the option to discuss working arrangements with their line manager. All applicants must reside within the UK.
